As House opens, pro-worker bills pushed

Demands for immediate passage of pro-worker bills welcomed the re-opening of the House of Representatives today. Anakpawis Partylist Executive Vice President and former Representative Joel Maglunsod cited the urgency to pass the House Bills 375 (P125 across-the-board wage hike Bill) and 5110(Regular Employment Bill) as power rates and oil prices hiked anew.

“While our Congressmen enjoyed long vacations and the entertainment of Congressman Pacquiao’s fight, our workers dealt with new and heavier burdens. Now its time for them to get back to work and immediately act on bills that are most substantial for the people especially our workers” Maglunsod said.

House Bill 375

Anakpawis Representative Rafael Mariano filed the House Bill 375, which aims to legislate a P125-across-the-board wage hike. The Bill was first filed way back in 2001 and has been sitting in Congress for more than a decade. Maglunsod stressed the urgency of the bill amidst last week’s power rate hikes and today’s P1.90 diesel, P0.90 regular gasoline and kerosene price hikes.

“This Bill has long been overdue and needs to be swiftly acted upon by the House of Representatives. The recent increase in power rates and oil prices stresses the need for a legislated across-the-board wage hike. It is an immediate economic relief for our workers who’s meager wages could not cope anymore with the never-ending price increases” said Maglunsod.

House Bill 5110

Another bill being pushed by Anakpawis Partylist is the Regular Employment Bill or the House Bill 5110 that is described as an act to strengthen workers’ security of tenure by amending provisions of the Labor Code that permits labor-only-contracting. According to Maglunsod, this bill has the same importance and urgency as the wage hike bill because widespread labor contractualization has brought irreparable damages to workers’ rights and welfare.

“Contractual workers suffer more from the soaring prices of basic goods and services. They receive wages way lower than the minimum wage. Worse, they don’t have any assurance until when they could feed their families because of their unsecured jobs” Maglunsod said.

“Various contractualization schemes have been a dagger in the heart of Filipino workers. It subjects them to ground low wages, lack of proper benefits and violates their rights to form unions and to collectively bargain for higher wages. Contractualization is very rampant in the country. According to studies, contractuals now outnumber regular workers” he added.

Anakpawis Partylist called on workers to push the House of Representatives to act swiftly in enacting these pro-worker bills.

“The fight for substantial wage increase and against contractualization is a fight to be fought by every worker especially now that their economic and financial situation worsens. Let us show support for our Bills and push our Congressmen to enact them as soon as possible for it would benefit, even as just an immediate relief, our Filipino workers and their families and the whole nation as well” Maglunsod ended. ##
